3 ply corrugated box: single-wall board for light parcels

A 3 ply corrugated box is single-wall board, about 420 g per square metre, with one fluted layer between two liners. It is the choice for light parcels, mailers, retail cartons and light e-commerce, in E or B flute. It carries roughly up to 5 kg and prints cleanly. Step up to 5 ply when the load asks for it.

What is a 3 ply corrugated box?

A 3 ply corrugated box is single-wall board: one fluted middle layer sandwiched between a flat outer liner and a flat inner liner. That single flute is what gives the board its stiffness and cushioning. It runs about 420 g per square metre, the lightest of the three plies we make.

Because it is single wall, a 3 ply carton is light, easy to fold and cheap to ship flat. It uses E flute at about 1.5 mm for a smooth print face, or B flute at about 3 mm for a firmer wall on retail boxes. Both sit inside the single-wall band.

3 ply is single-wall board at about 420 g per square metre. It is the default box until the load or the stack tells you to go heavier.
  • Structure: one fluted layer, two liners, single wall.
  • Weight: about 420 g per square metre of board.
  • Flute: E at about 1.5 mm for smooth print, or B at about 3 mm for a firmer wall.
  • Best for: light parcels, mailers, retail cartons, light e-commerce.

What does a 3 ply box carry, and when do you step up?

A single wall corrugated box handles light to mid-light goods: apparel, cosmetics, books, small electronics accessories, most D2C parcels. It is the right box when the contents are not heavy and the parcels are not stacked many high in transit. When the load gets denser, or the cartons stack tall on a pallet, the board needs a second wall, and that is where 5 ply comes in.

Mid-weight or fragileGlassware, appliances, denser goods5 ply double wall
Heavy or dense bulkMachine parts, tiles, export loads7 ply triple wall

Reading the table: 3 ply is the workhorse for light parcels and retail cartons. Choose 5 ply corrugated boxes when the goods are fragile or mid-weight, and heavy-duty 7 ply only when the load is genuinely heavy or dense. Over-speccing to 5 ply for a light parcel just adds board weight and cost for strength you never use.

When is 3 ply overkill or not enough?

3 ply is not enough when the box is fragile-heavy, stacks many high, or travels a rough export route: the single wall flexes under a tall stack and the contents take the shock. Move to 5 ply then. It is close to overkill only at the very bottom, for tiny featherweight items where a folding carton or a padded mailer would do; but even there a small 3 ply RSC is often the cleaner, more protective choice.

What does a 3 ply box cost?

A 3 ply box price is set by board area, the paper rate on the day, print and quantity. Because single wall uses the least board, it is the cheapest ply to run. Two worked examples, both plain and unprinted at 1,000 boxes, show the pattern.

Frequently asked questions

What weight range does a 3 ply box carry?

3 ply single-wall board carries light to mid-light loads, roughly up to about 5 kg per box for most parcels, as long as the cartons are not stacked many high in transit. Apparel, cosmetics, books and light e-commerce all sit comfortably in 3 ply. For denser or fragile goods, or tall pallet stacks, step up to 5 ply double wall.

What does a 3 ply box cost?

It depends on size, print, quantity and the paper rate, and single wall is the cheapest ply to run. As worked examples at 1,000 plain boxes: a 12 x 10 x 6 in box is about Rs 12.78 to Rs 17.66 each, and an 8 x 6 x 3 in box is about Rs 5.03 to Rs 6.96 each. These are bands, not fixed quotes.

Is a 3 ply box printable?

Yes. 3 ply prints cleanly, especially in E flute at about 1.5 mm, which gives a smooth face for a logo, a single-colour marking or full brand print. B flute at about 3 mm also prints well. Print adds a step to the price, so a plain box is always the cheapest option.

Can I get a mailer or RSC in 3 ply?

Yes. Both the standard RSC shipping shape and a mailer style are made in 3 ply single wall. RSC is the common all-flaps-meet-in-the-middle carton for parcels; a 3 ply mailer suits light D2C shipments. Send your size on WhatsApp or use the quote engine for a live band.

When should I choose 5 ply instead?

Choose 5 ply double wall when the goods are fragile or mid-weight, when cartons stack tall on a pallet, or on rougher export routes where single wall would flex. 5 ply runs about 700 g per square metre against 3 ply at about 420, so it costs more board weight; use it when protection matters more than weight and cost.

Is a 3 ply carton the same as single wall?

Yes. A 3 ply carton and a single wall corrugated box are the same thing: one fluted layer between two liners, at about 420 g per square metre. 5 ply is double wall with two flutes, and 7 ply is triple wall with three. More plies mean more walls, more strength and more board weight.
