Because it is die-cut rather than slotted, the shape is not limited to a plain box. The die can add a scooped front for easy reach, finger holes for pulling the bin out, a label window on the face, and self-locking tabs that hold the walls square under load. How do you size a pick bin?
Size in two passes. First to the shelf, then to the SKU. Start with the shelf bay, because a bin that does not fit the pitch either wastes space or fouls the shelf above. Measure the clear width, the usable depth, and the height between shelves, then divide the width into a whole number of bins so a row fills the bay with no dead gap. Leave a few millimetres of finger clearance between bins so a picker can lift one out without dragging its neighbours.
Then check the SKU. The bin has to hold a sensible quantity of the part, front-load with the reach you want, and keep the label face clear. For deep bins on a low shelf, a scooped or stepped front lets the hand reach the back without tipping the bin. For tall parts, an open-top bin indexes better than an open front. 3-ply or 5-ply: which do you need?
Ply is the count of paper layers in the board, and for bins it is a load-and-life decision, not a shipping one. These bins mostly sit on a shelf, so the question is how heavy the contents are, how tall the bins stack, and how many times a day a hand pulls on the open front. Light parts on a single shelf are happy in 3-ply. Heavy parts, tall stacks, or a hard-worked pick line want the extra wall of 5-ply.
A quick way to decide: if a full bin is light enough to lift one-handed and it never carries another bin on top, 3-ply is usually enough. If it is heavy, or bins stack, or the same bin gets pulled open hundreds of times a week, step to 5-ply so the front does not soften and sag. Plain or printed labels?
The label face is where a bin earns its keep on a pick line, and you have three routes. Plain kraft bins with a stuck-on label pocket are the cheapest and the most flexible: you print labels in-house and swap them as SKUs move. A printed label window die-cut into the face lets you slide a card in and out without adhesive. Or the label prints directly on the board, one colour, for bins that hold a fixed SKU that will not change.
For most warehouses the plain bin with your own label wins, because SKUs rotate and a printed bin locks the position. Direct print makes sense for permanent fixtures, colour-coded zones, or branded bins seen by customers, for example at a kitting or returns station on a fulfilment floor. Keep print to one or two colours: it is cheaper and reads faster across an aisle than a busy design.
