THE KRAFT LEDGER

Packaging Industry News India, September 2026 | The Kraft Ledger

In short

September 2026 was the month kraft paper costs reached box buyers. Associations in Uttar Pradesh reported kraft up about 25 to 30% in under two months, and South Indian box makers announced a 20% carton price increase. Printers in Punjab revised rates by 15 to 20%. In North America, containerboard mills pushed hikes of up to USD 140 per ton.

What happened to kraft paper prices in September 2026?

Kraft paper, the raw material in every corrugated box, climbed sharply through August and September 2026. The Uttar Pradesh Corrugated Box Manufacturers Association reported on 28 September 2026 that kraft rose about 25 to 30% in under two months. It also said mills that once offered longer terms had cut credit toward about seven days, which tightens working capital for small box makers.

The rise did not come in one step. South Indian box makers, reported by PrintWeek India on 15 September 2026, cited three successive mill price hikes between 12 August and 5 September behind their own cost pressure. So by the end of the month the paper rate had moved up repeatedly, and the associations were speaking about it in public.

Which box and print prices moved?

The paper rise reached finished prices in September. PrintWeek India reported on 15 September 2026 that South Indian box makers announced a 20% carton price increase, after the three successive mill hikes between 12 August and 5 September. That is a regional association announcement, not a single fixed number for every carton, since the rise on any given box depends on its board area, ply and print.

Print rates moved too. Screen Print India reported on 25 September 2026 that the Offset Printers Association in Ludhiana set a 15 to 20% price revision, effective 21 September 2026. Read the detail in our post on the Punjab printers price revision.

What happened outside India?

The pressure was not only Indian. Packaging Gateway reported on 8 September 2026 that North American containerboard mills pushed price increases through the month. Packaging Corporation of America set USD 140 per ton effective 1 September. Cascades set USD 110 per ton on linerboard and USD 140 per ton on medium, effective 8 September. Across the mills, the increases ranged USD 80 to 140 per ton.

These figures are North American and stay in USD per ton; they do not set an Indian rate. They matter as context, because global containerboard tightening sits behind part of the cost pressure. Read the detail in our post on the North America containerboard price hike.

What changed on GST?

On tax, September 2026 marked one year of 5% GST on corrugated boxes under HSN 4819, in force since 22 September 2025. The box rate itself did not change during the month.

What box makers keep raising is the paper-side rate, which sits above the 5% on boxes and leaves converters carrying credit they cannot fully set off. For the detail on that gap and what the associations have asked for, read our GST post.

What this means for your box price

Paper is the largest single input in a corrugated box, so a paper rise flows through to the box. As a rough sensitivity, a Rs 5 per kg rise in the paper rate adds about Rs 1.10 to a 3 ply 12 by 10 by 6 inch box and about Rs 1.84 on the same box in 5 ply. This is our estimate, paper cost only, before conversion and GST, so treat it as direction, not a quote.

The levers that protect your box budget are the ordinary ones, and they matter more when paper is dear:

  • Lock quotes for festive and Q4 volumes early, before more paper moves land.
  • Right-size the box to the product, so you are not paying for board and air you do not ship.
  • Choose ply by real load, not by habit; a correctly specced 3 ply beats an over-built 5 ply on cost.
  • Reuse your die on repeat orders, so tooling is paid once and not again.
