US Containerboard Prices Up to USD 140/Ton | Sept 2026 Hikes

In short

North American containerboard makers announced September 2026 price increases of USD 80 to 140 per ton, led by Packaging Corporation of America at USD 140. About 3.9 million tons of US capacity, roughly 10%, was permanently removed between February 2025 and March 2026, tightening supply even as US box shipments fell 1.8% in Q1.

Which mills announced increases, and by how much?

In early September 2026, several North American containerboard producers announced fresh price increases. Packaging Corporation of America led with USD 140 per ton, effective 1 September. Other majors followed with their own numbers, and the increases span linerboard, white-top and corrugating medium.

Georgia-Pacific, ND Paper and White Birch Paper were among other producers also seeking September increases. The spread from USD 80 to USD 140 per ton shows the round is broad rather than the move of a single mill.

Were the earlier hikes accepted?

The September round is the third wave of the year. Containerboard prices held flat in August for a second consecutive month, and a net USD 100 per ton had been recognised year to date from the first two rounds. So the market has already absorbed real increases this year before this latest push.

That matters because an announced hike is not the same as a recognised one. The first two rounds together landed at USD 100 per ton net. Whether the September numbers stick is the open question, and it turns on how tight supply stays against demand.

Announced is not the same as recognised. Two rounds netted USD 100 per ton; September is the third.

Why does US board pricing matter to Indian buyers?

Our view: paper is a global market. Global board and recycled-fibre prices influence the cost of imported fibre and imported liner, and that adds to the pressure already on Indian mills. When capacity comes out of the US system and prices firm there, the fibre that Indian converters buy does not move in isolation.

About 3.9 million tons of US containerboard capacity, roughly 10% of the total, was permanently removed between February 2025 and March 2026. Supply tightened even though US box shipments fell 1.8% year on year in the first quarter. Tighter global supply is one more input on a cost base that Indian buyers already watch closely, so it is worth tracking rather than reacting to.

What to watch in October

The number to watch is whether the September increases show up in the monthly price reports, the way the earlier USD 100 per ton did. If the third wave is recognised, it confirms that supply is tight enough to carry the announcements through. If it slips, the round joins the list of announced-but-not-landed hikes.

We track the Indian side of this each month in the kraft ledger, so the US round sits next to what actually happens to domestic rates.

What this means for your box price

This is a US market story, and it does not mean Vikrama Industries has raised its own prices. Our estimate bands are unchanged and confirmed on WhatsApp against the day's paper rate. We flag the US round because global fibre pressure is part of the backdrop every Indian buyer is planning against.
