Pharma Secondary Packaging: Shipper Cartons Done Right
A pharma shipper carton is the corrugated outer that holds unit cartons, strips or vials through transit and warehousing. You order it by shipment type, contents weight and stacking height, which set ply and format. Vikrama Industries makes the corrugated shipper carton; primary-pack compliance sits with your primary packaging supplier.
What is a pharma shipper carton, and what is it not?
A pharma shipper carton is the corrugated outer box that carries your product through the supply chain. It holds the unit cartons, blister strips, bottles or vials that your primary packaging supplier has already filled and sealed. It rides pallets, sits in the warehouse, moves on trucks and reaches the distributor. This is secondary and tertiary packaging, the transit layer, not the pack that touches the medicine.
The line matters, so we state it plainly. Vikrama Industries makes the corrugated shipper carton; primary-pack compliance sits with your primary packaging supplier. We do not make blisters, bottles, closures, foils or the printed unit carton that carries drug schedule text. We make the outer that protects those packs and carries the batch and statutory print that a shipper is required to show on the outside.
Getting that scope right up front keeps the order clean. You tell us the shipment, the contents weight and the stack height. We give you a corrugated shipper that survives the route and prints the batch block clearly on a face that stays flat. Nothing about our box changes what your primary pack has to be.

Which shipper ply and format fits each shipment?
The shipper is sized by three things: how much it carries, how high it stacks, and how far it travels. Light unit cartons in a short local hop need less board than heavy bottle packs going across states on a full pallet. Match the format to the load and you stop paying for board you do not need, and you stop under-building a box that crushes in the middle of the stack.
| Shipment type | Typical contents | Recommended ply | Format |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light unit cartons, local | Blister carton packs, low weight | 3-ply | Regular slotted carton (RSC) |
| Mixed cartons, regional | Unit cartons plus leaflets | 3-ply or 5-ply | RSC with full-depth flaps |
| Bottles and vials, stacked | Glass or PET bottles in trays | 5-ply | RSC with inner partition |
| Heavy bulk, inter-state | Dense packs, tall pallet stack | 5-ply or 7-ply | RSC or full-overlap for stack strength |
| Cold-chain outer | Insulated primary inside | 5-ply | RSC sized to the insulated pack |
Ply is the first lever, format is the second. A regular slotted carton suits most shippers. A full-overlap flap adds a double layer on the top and bottom faces, which helps when boxes sit low in a tall pallet and carry the weight above them. An inner partition or pad keeps bottles from knocking each other, so the corrugated does the transit job and the primary pack is not asked to absorb shocks it was not built for.
- Weigh the packed contents first: grammage and ply follow the load, not a guess.
- Set the stack height: a box low in the pallet needs more crush resistance than one on top.
- Fix the internal size to the unit-carton count so contents do not shift in transit.
- Add a partition or pad for bottles and vials so glass does not meet glass.
- Keep at least one broad face clear for the batch and statutory print block.
- Decide the print method early: flexo line print for batch data, litho-lam only if you need heavy coverage.
Where do batch and statutory details print?
A shipper carries outer-carton information: product name, pack count, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, storage line and any transit handling marks. Some of this is over-printed or labelled at your line when the batch is known. Our job is to give you clean, flat faces where that print and those labels sit square and stay readable through the warehouse and the route.
We reserve a broad face for the batch block and keep it clear of flap seams, tape lines and creases. Pre-printed fixed text, the product name, the pack count, handling icons, goes on in our run. Variable batch data is added at your end, so the shipper reaches you ready for the line coder or the label applicator. We hold the artwork position so every repeat run prints in the same place.
One boundary stays firm. The print we carry is outer transit and identification text on the shipper. It is not the regulated primary-pack labelling. Vikrama Industries makes the corrugated shipper carton; primary-pack compliance sits with your primary packaging supplier, and the schedule text, drug content and regulated warnings live on that primary pack, not on our outer.
Batch and statutory transit text sits on a clean, flat face we reserve, square to the box and clear of every seam and crease.
How do held specs and clean warehousing help repeat runs?
Pharma buyers reorder the same shipper for months. Once a spec is approved, we hold it: internal dimensions, ply, board grammage band, flute, print position and the exact die. Your next purchase order names the held spec and the run repeats to the same box, so the pallet pattern, the case count and the batch print block do not move between orders. A physical sample is approved before the first run, and that approved sample becomes the reference for every repeat.
Storage matters for a corrugated shipper. Board takes on moisture, and a damp box loses stack strength. Flat blanks are kept off the floor and away from damp, stored and dispatched so the box you approved is the box that reaches your line. This is ordinary clean warehousing of the corrugated, not a claim about your product or your primary pack.
The comparison is not about price alone. A held spec removes re-approval time and keeps the shipper predictable, which is what a regulated supply chain needs from its outer packaging. You order the same box, it prints in the same place, and it stacks the same on the pallet. When the specification is stable, the confirmation is quick, usually in minutes, always within 24 hours, because there is nothing new to work out.
What does a pharma shipper cost, worked out?
Price starts with the flat blank. Take a mid-size 5-ply shipper near 400 x 300 x 300 mm holding stacked bottle trays. Its flat blank works out near 0.86 square metres. At 5-ply grammage close to 700 grams per square metre, one box carries about 0.6 kg of board. Recycled kraft trades in a market band, roughly Rs 38 to Rs 46 per kg, so the board cost sits near Rs 23 to Rs 28 per box.
Add conversion and margin as a band, keep the print to a batch line block, and apply a quantity step for a 2000-box run. The per-box estimate lands near Rs 42 to Rs 58. The kraft paper rate is a market band, so this is a worked example, not a fixed quote. Prices attract 5% GST (HSN 4819); a GST invoice is issued with every order. Your confirmed figure comes back usually in minutes, always within 24 hours, once a person checks the day's paper rate and your exact size.
| Ply | Board weight per box | Board cost band | Per-box estimate band |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-ply | about 0.36 kg | Rs 14 to Rs 17 | Rs 26 to Rs 36 |
| 5-ply | about 0.60 kg | Rs 23 to Rs 28 | Rs 42 to Rs 58 |
| 7-ply | about 0.84 kg | Rs 32 to Rs 39 | Rs 58 to Rs 80 |
The same shipper in a heavier ply carries more grams, so its band sits higher, which is the cost of the extra stack strength a tall inter-state pallet needs. These are example bands built from the method, not fixed quotes. A physical sample is approved before any run, and the approved sample is held as the reference for repeat orders.
Frequently asked questions
Do you make the primary pack or the blister and bottle?
No. Vikrama Industries makes the corrugated shipper carton, the secondary and tertiary outer that holds your packs in transit. The blister, strip, bottle, closure and the regulated unit carton come from your primary packaging supplier, and primary-pack compliance sits with them.
Can the batch number and expiry print on the shipper?
We reserve a clean, flat face for the outer batch block and print fixed text like product name, pack count and handling marks in our run. Variable batch and expiry data is added at your line, over-printed or labelled, so the shipper reaches you ready for the coder or applicator.
Which ply should a pharma shipper be?
It depends on contents weight and stack height. Light unit cartons for local delivery suit 3-ply. Stacked bottles and vials suit 5-ply, often with an inner partition. Heavy bulk on tall inter-state pallets suits 5-ply or 7-ply, sometimes with a full-overlap flap for stack strength.
Will my repeat orders match the first run?
Yes. Once your sample is approved we hold the spec: internal size, ply, flute, die and print position. Your purchase order names that held spec and the run repeats to the same box, so case count, pallet pattern and the batch print block stay the same across orders.
How are the flat blanks stored before dispatch?
Flat blanks are kept off the floor and away from damp, because board loses stack strength when it takes on moisture. This is clean warehousing of the corrugated shipper so the box you approved is the box that reaches your line. It is not a claim about your product or primary pack.
Are these prices final?
No. The per-box figures are worked example bands, because the recycled kraft rate is a market band that moves with demand and supply. Prices attract 5% GST (HSN 4819); a GST invoice is issued with every order, and a person confirms your exact figure usually in minutes, always within 24 hours.
